Study Operations
Management in Ecuador
May 2009
St. Ambrose University
Operations Management is concerned with the
creation of goods and services. It is often considered to be
one of three primary business functions: operations, finance, and
marketing. Finance is concerned with providing funds
necessary for operation, and marketing is concerned with promoting
and/or selling goods or services. The essence of "Operations
Management" is
to add value during transformation process (the difference between
the cost of inputs and value and price of outputs)..
In May 2009, consider studying Operations
Management in Ecuador with Professor Jerz. This is a unique
opportunity to complete a business course, travel to another
country, experience the cultural differences in business and people,
practice your Spanish, and develop special friendships. A
proposed syllabus is
available here.
The trip will be limited to approximately six students.
|
This is the second time that this
course is being offered in Ecuador. In our first visit,
students spent 25 days in Ecuador. During this trip, students
saw operations management principles applied to many organizations
and daily life, including:
Five
manufacturing organizations Two social service organizations Three major Ecuadorian cities Six towns and villages A National park (Cajas) One vacation resort Two museums Native Indian cultures Banking and currency operations Transportation systems (four airports, bus, taxis, and autos) Hotel (accommodation) systems (homes, hotels, and hostels) Family operations (students lived with host families) Education (CEDEI facilities) Food services (many restaurants, grocery, markets, and local
eateries) Merchandising (malls, and many shops and stores)
Students also participated in a service
project: helping a small town improve one of its trail systems.
Operations, the way people and organizations
operate were observed in every daily activity! |
|
| Operations Management students
will be traveling with other SAU students studying Spanish and other topics.
St. Ambrose University has been traveling to Ecuador for over 15
years, and this is a very well organized experience, and safe.
