Catalog Description |
|
This course is an introduction to the concepts
and methods for planning, routing, scheduling, and controlling
operations in both manufacturing and service industries. Topics
include the concept of competitiveness, use of technology, process
measurement, quality, forecasting, waiting lines, human resources
issues, project management, supply chain management, just-in-time (JIT)
systems, planning, scheduling, and inventory systems. |

Course Objectives and Format |
|
There are three objectives of this course: |
|
1. To comprehend what operations
management is, terminology, and the context of operations within
business.
2. To comprehend what business operations
differ between U.S. and other countries, namely Ecuador.
3. To solve a variety of operations management problems by
building and using quantitative models in Microsoft Excel and
other software programs.
|
|
Format:
Each day will include lectures and student discussions. Eight
tours are planned that include both manufacturing and service
industries. The tours will be used to illustrate operations
management topic in action, and to compare various operations
management topics between Ecuador and the United States.

0132209292. Lecture notes will be provided and there is no need to
take these books to Ecuador. (There are two books in this bundle.) |

Attendance and lectures: Attendance is required.
You are expected to review the lecture materials prior to
class. Tours and papers:
Attendance is required for each tour. After the tour, you
should write a paper (up to one page) describing what you saw, what
aspects of operations management topics were observed, and how the
organizations operations compare to similar organization in the
United States.
